Visual examination: what condition is present?
Visual examination looks for specified conditions such as pitting, burrs, scoring, damage or incorrect identification. The inspection needs defined coverage, suitable illumination and an acceptance reference. In the teaching engine block, pitting on a sealing face and scoring inside a bore are observations that should be located and recorded. Their appearance alone does not establish depth, size or serviceability.
Dimensional measurement: what is the actual value?
A dimensional check compares a measured value with a specified requirement. In the lab example, the bore requirement is 86.000 ±0.020 mm. The illustrative reading of 86.014 mm sits between 85.980 and 86.020 mm. That establishes only the displayed example check; a real bore plan may need additional sections and directions.
Keep each check specific
A correct bore diameter does not establish whether an adjoining deck has an unacceptable local gap or sits at the required height. The lab uses a bore gauge for diameter, calipers for bridge width, a straightedge and feeler blade for local gaps, and a fixture-referenced height gauge for deck height. Each method answers its own specified question.
Choose equipment for the requirement
Instrument selection involves the feature, access, range and measurement capability. Setup, alignment and uncertainty matter as well as display resolution. A calibration reference does not make every setup suitable for every tolerance. The measurement approach should be agreed with the responsible quality team, particularly near an acceptance boundary.
Record the observation and its limits
Keep the result specific: “scoring observed in cylinder 04” and “86.014 mm at the specified bore section” convey different evidence. Do not translate a visual observation into an unsupported numerical depth, or one acceptable dimension into approval of the whole part. Escalate uncertain results through the agreed process.
Put the two methods together
Start with the inspection lab, select a visual defect, then run a dimensional characteristic on the same model. The purpose is to connect the requirement, the method and the record. The demonstration uses illustrative geometry and values; it is not a statement of equipment availability or a substitute for an assignment-specific inspection plan.
